As temperatures drop with the onset of Chillai-Kalan, the Kashmir Valley is blasted by a severe cold wave. Pahalgam and Gulmarg also experienced below-freezing temperatures, with Srinagar recording its coldest night at -6.2°C. The low temperatures have impacted water supply and daily life, and the forecast predicts further cold weather and possibly snowfall in the upper altitudes.
Temperatures in the valley have plummeted as Kashmir prepares for the 40-day Chillai-Kalan, the region's harshest winter season, exacerbating the cold wave. According to reports, temperatures in Srinagar dropped to -6.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, making it the coldest night of the season.
The city's water delivery infrastructure, as well as the edges of bodies of water like the famous Dal Lake, have frozen due to the cold weather.
According to the meteorological office, the temperature in Pahalgam, a critical base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in the valley's southern region, dipped to - 8.2 degrees Celsius from - 6.8 degrees the previous evening. Gulmarg's lowest temperature recorded was -6 degrees Celsius.
Konibal, a little town outside of Pampore, had the lowest recorded temperature in the valley, at 9.2 degrees Celsius. Other locations had significantly low temperatures, with Kokernag in the south reaching - 5.8 degrees Celsius, Kupwara in the north recording - 6.5 degrees Celsius, and Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recording - 7.6 degrees Celsius.
The prolonged dry spell has exacerbated the people' issues, causing common winter ailments such as colds and coughs to become more severe. In addition to disturbing daily routines and the water supply, the cold weather has made it difficult for many locals to access basic services.
The valley is anticipated to have largely dry weather until December 26, according to the meteorological office. However, on December 21-22, there may be some light snowfall in the highest areas. There will most likely be another spell of light snowfall from December 27 until the morning of December 28. Despite these brief delays, the cold wave is expected to last for a few more days, with temperatures dropping further.
Chillai-Kalan, Kashmir's toughest winter season, begins on Saturday. Historically, this time of year has been marked by significant snowfall and extreme low temperatures, which frequently cause rivers and lakes to freeze. The period will end on January 31, followed by the 20-day Chillai-Khurd (small cold) phase and the 10-day Chillai-Bachha (baby cold) phase.
Even as residents brace for a harsh winter, tourists continue to flock to the valley in search of the beautiful, snow-covered landscapes of Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
