Ulun Danu Beratan Temple at Beratan Lake is a significant temple in the Mengwi kingdom, known as Dang Kahyangan. In Bali, Hindu temples are known as “pura”, being designed as open-air places of worship in walled compounds. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, one of nine “Kahyangan Jagat” temples in Bali, is dedicated to the Balinese water, lake, river, and sea goddess Dewi Danu. Built in 1633, it features an 11-storey pelinggih meru dedicated to Shiva and Parvathi, and a Buddha statue. It comprises four shrines, including the Lingga Petak shrine, and is known for fertility and prosperity.
The water in the lake, formed by a volcanic eruption 30,000 years ago, serves the entire region, with smaller temples specific to each irrigation association downstream.
