The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has achieved a significant milestone by completing the construction of a 298 km road that links Nimmu, Padam, and Darcha in Ladakh. This newly established road serves as a third axis to the strategically crucial region, augmenting the pre-existing routes from Manali to Leh and Srinagar to Leh.

Route Details:

The new road connects Manali to Leh through Darcha and Nimmu on the Kargil-Leh national highway.

It provides an additional pathway apart from the existing Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh routes.

The road spans 298 kilometers and offers essential connectivity to Ladakh, especially during challenging circumstances.

Strategic Significance:

Amid persistent border tensions with China, this achievement strengthens defence readiness along the northern borders.

It stimulates economic growth in the Zanskar valley and addresses security and developmental requirements.

Efficiency and All-Weather Connectivity:

Unlike other routes, this road provides a shorter and more efficient way.

It features only one pass, Shinkun La, situated at an altitude of 16,558 ft.

The initiation of tunnel construction at Shinkun La emphasizes the commitment to establishing all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.

Importantly, this road ensures year-round access to Ladakh, reducing reliance on aerial routes during winters when the Manali-Leh highway remains closed.
