The country is all set to get its first-ever underwater metro service in Kolkata

India’s first underwater Metro line was inaugurated in Kolkata on Wednesday 06.03.2024. This groundbreaking addition connects the city center at Esplanade with Howrah, providing a faster communication alternative for daily commuters in one of the densely populated cities of the country. Route: The underwater Metro route spans 520 meters under the Hooghly River in just 45 seconds.

Deepest Metro Station: The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section includes the deepest Metro station in India, situated 30 meters deep beneath the riverbed at Howrah.

Significance: This Metro line is the first transportation tunnel under a river in India.

Expansion: A head of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, a total of 11.45 kilometers is being added to the existing Kolkata Metro network, including extensions on the Orange, Green, and Purple Lines.

Metro Network Growth: Since its inception in 1984, the Kolkata Metro Network has expanded significantly. Notably, between 2014 and 2023, the network witnessed the highest-ever expansion of 14.23 kilometers in a single year, contributing to a 36% increase in the existing network.

Current Network: Presently, the Kolkata metro network spans a total of 47.93 kilometers, covering the North-South Corridor, East-West Corridor, and Joka-Esplanade Corridor. An additional 13.27 kilometers of extension is planned.
