Takdah is an old place near Darjeeling (only 28 Kms). originally it was called 'Tukdah' which means mist in Lepcha language. Takdah is home for few scenic Tea Gardens of Darjeeling namely Glenburg Tea Estate, Rangli Rangliot Tea Estate, Giele Tea Estate etc. Takdah is administratively within Rangli Rangliot Block in Darjeeling District of West Bengal in India.
In old times Takdah was a military cantonment (British Colonial times) before the independence of India. During those days many bungalows were constructed in Takdah to accommodate high ranking British army officials. Most of the house were built between 1910 to 1915.
Nowadays, a few of the bungalows has been taken over by few individuals and have been converted into homestays. Few homestays are luxurious with Suite room facility, bathtubs and all modern equipment. Few bungalows were developed as schools.
Takdah is very serene, amidst lush green forest cover. It is a very good place for bird watchers. Takdah is in high altitude compared to other neighbouring towns and thus you can find Cedar trees surrounding Takdah. Takdah can accommodate budget as well as premium guests as it is having bungalows and homestays of different ranges.
Takdah has a great orchid centre for the tourists. You can find many Himalayan orchids are being cultivated. A small Buddhist monastery is also there in Takdah named - Dechhen Pema Tsholing Monastery. Bara Mangwa, Chhota Mangwa, Tinchuley are the popular tourist spots nearby Takdah.
Siliguri / NJP Station / Bagdogra Airport to Takdah is almost 80 Kms and it is a drive of 3hrs.
