The Sikkim government has reportedly commenced payment of an entry fee of Rs.50 per tourist from March 14, Reported by PTI. Officially informed the media on Friday that the fee is charged under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules 2025. Bulk-up funds will be used in improvement of tourism infrastructure, road connectivity, cleanliness and overall experience for visitors throughout the state.
The fee will be collected from the tourist in the hotels while check in and deposited in the Tourism Sustainability Development (TSD) Fund. Almost all tourists will pay this fee except children below five years of age for a maximum of 30 days of stay. A tourist if returned to Sikkim after a period of one month will have to pay the fee again.
Here are some important points to remember when planning a trip to Sikkim:
1. Pack smart: To make sure a planned stable trip, plan your trip keep in mind the current weather conditions. The upper regions of Sikkim remains cold almost throughout the year, so warm clothing- jackets, sweaters, thermals and scarves are needed even in summer.
2. Travel essentials: Wear comfortable shoes for walking and trekking. Take sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat with you to protect you from direct UV rays. Carry appropriate medicines if you have altitude sickness or motion sickness.
3. Transportation and budget: Traveling on the winding and narrow roads of Sikkim, will set you extra time for travel and budget accordingly. Take the Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) buses from Siliguri to gangtok or hire a private vehicle for a more comfortable journey.
4. Carry the necessary documents: Some areas especially close to international borders and hilly regions need special permission. So keep your important documents ready like driving license, voter id or Aadhar card for verification at checkpoints. Always check the latest information on the Sikkim tourism website or brochure before your travel.
5. Stay away from plastic water bottles: Sikkim has imposed a ban on plastic bottles. Carry a reusable metal bottle instead. Drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated and avoid altitude sickness, especially as the weather remains very dry in Sikkim.
