As reported by ANI, India's first vertical lift railway bridge, an engineering feat, is about to be inaugurated on Pamban, Rameswaram, replacing the historic British built Pamban Railway Bridge. The old bridge commissioned in the early year 1914, had been built with manual operated horizontal opening mechanism to allow the ships to pass.
The completion of this State's art structure marks the finishing of a crucial chapter in railway infrastructure in India, improving connectivity between the mainland and Rameswaram.
This pamban bridge was initially built for Metre Gauge trains, which were later strengthened to accommodate Broad Guage traffic and was reopened for operation.
However, considering the deficiencies of the old structure, the ministry of Railways approved the construction of a new modern bridge. It is constructed at a cost of Rs 531 crore. The new bridge is a 2.1 km long structure developed by Southern Railway in association with Rail Vikas Nigam.
The fascinating features of new bridge is that it is 72.5m long central span, which can be lifted to a height of 17m for the ships to pass underneath. The advance electro mechanical lift mechanism is integrated with train control systems for smooth and automated working.
Located in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, this bridge serves as a vital link to rameswaram, tourists can visit a sacred place of pilgrimage and one of the Char Dham sites. The bridge currently has one electrified railway track but provision have been made for a second line in the future to accommodate growing rail traffic.
