New strict rules for tourists in Bali: Visitors ought to know.

The tourism board of Bali has implemented new laws to deter unruly foreign tourists and to protect the Balinese culture. These new regulations were declared by Governer I Wayan Koster on March 24, with the larger purpose of dignifying and ensuring sustainable tourism on the island as it prepares for Nyepi, Bali's Day of silience on March 29.

Tourists are enjoined to respect sacred sites, dress respectfully and behave properly. Also the tourists are obliged to pay the tourists levy online, use only licenced guiding services and obey Indonesian traffic laws. "Issued a similar regulation before, but as things change and need to adapt. This ensures that Bali's tourism remains respectful, sustainable and in harmony with our local values", Koster stated. Breaking any of the new laws, including that of not paying the tourist levy, means instant disqualification for entry into any of the places. Offenders will be prosecuted according to Indonesian law.

Sacred places are one of the main priorities. Tourists must take permission or wear traditional Balinese outfit to enter temple areas. Climbing holy trees or taking disrespectful photos is strictly prohibited. According to the Love Bali report, single-use plastics, such as bags and straws are prohibited as well as swearing, rude behaviors, and hateful comments online. Koster adds, "Bali is a beautiful sacred island and we expect our guests to show the same respect that we extend to them.

"A specific team is alloted for this operation. And foreign tourist who are annoying will be dealt with strictly", Koster tells the Bali sun. The civil service police who will monitor visitor's activities. A tax for tourists was also considered in 2023 to deter these cheap tourists who actually caused many problems.
