The Assam state tourism department is taking a significant step to enhance the safety and security of visitors by introducing a dedicated “tourist police” force.
This initiative comes in response to the increased tourist footfall in Assam post-Covid last year. Under this scheme, tourist police units, stations, and necessary infrastructure will be established. The recently passed Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill, 2024 includes provisions for this new force.
Additionally, all accommodation facilities will now need to be registered with the tourism department. Assam joins other states in India, such as Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh, which have already implemented similar tourist police initiatives. The goal is to inspect tourist places and provide a safe and secure environment for travelers.
This move aligns with the nationwide introduction of tourist police units in 2022, following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Bureau of Police Research and Development. In 2023, Assam witnessed a record tourist footfall of 98.31 lakh, including both domestic and foreign visitors, making it the highest recorded figure in the past decade.
