A small yet beautiful mountain hamlet, Latpanchar has emerged as an amazing tourism destination in the Kurseong division of Darjeeling district. It offers stunning views including that of snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga, Avian Photographer must make a visit to the place to explore the 250 species of birds & animal life as well as many different types of amazing plantations. The surrounding villages of Selphu and Sittong has also formed a part of the tourism in this area along with Latpanchar.
Latpanchar is about 2 Hours drive from NJP (the nearest railway station) or Bagdogra (the nearest Airport). You can start for Latpanchar either at Kalijhora, about 28 km from Siliguri, or at Birik Dara, further 5 kms ahead. Through Kalijhora you will have to take the left turn and drive uphill for about 15 km to reach Latpanchar, through Birik you have to drive about 18 kms to reach Latpanchar.
The best time to visit Latpanchar is from October to April, although winters can be quite chilly and cold but the weather is wonderful to enjoy the flora and fauna of the place. The place is generally very quiet and peaceful with great tourist accommodations of different Homestay and lodges.
A day trip to Bagora – Chatakpur area can be easily made with Latpanchar as the base covering small villages such as Mana, Ahaldara, Pokhritar, Mahaldiram and others. Bird Watching is one of the main tourist attraction of the area, with numerous species can be spotted like Blue Whistling Thrush, Minivet, Sunbirds, Minivet, Woodpeckers, Bulbul, Drongo, Kingfinshers, Falcon, Eagle etc including Rufous Necked Hornbill, which nests in the surrounding area during its 4 month long nesting season. Local sightseeing includes Ahal Dara (sunrise over the Himalayas), The lake of Namthing (beautiful lake with natural habitat for a number of rare species namely Himalayan Salamander - Newt), Latkothi, Sittong Orange orchards.
