Initiated by the Central Government, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata after 100 years of existence (established in 1924 as Dum Dum airport) is set to undergo a significant transformation. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced plans to revamp the airport to make it a global hub for international flights, keeping its heritage alive of connecting world with India. The Government has curated road maps, and according to the plan rapid development will take place till November 2025 benefiting a lot of people including general Pupils of Kolkata.
During the airport’s centenary celebrations, the minister revealed that flights to 100 destinations would soon operate daily from Kolkata. Presently, the airport handles 64 flights (15 international and 49 domestic destinations), with this planned expansion, Kolkata airport aims to regain its reputation as important international travel hub, which it previously possessed with direct flights to London and Paris. The government plans to boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 260 million to 450 million by constructing a new terminal scheduled for completion by November 2025.
A budget-friendly and affordable ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’ have also been introduced, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, in addition to enhancing passenger handling efficiency and world-class infrastructure, innovative amenities.
Other than Kolkata Airport the government is also prioritising the development of other airports in West Bengal, including Bagdogra, Andal, and Cooch Behar. Bagdogra airport, strategically located near the ‘Chicken Neck’ in Siliguri, will receive substantial investments due to its critical importance for national security and economic activities and also so that money & materials could be supplied to the North-eastern states.
These advancements would “spur economic growth, create new jobs, and establish airports as hubs of economic activity”. The Kolkata airport has already implemented 17 MW solar power plant with the government’s focus on sustainable aviation development, significantly reducing the facility’s carbon footprint.
This aligns with plans to increase the number of airports in the country from 158 to 208 over the next five years, and transform Kolkata airport into a pivotal player in connecting India to the global stage.
