Kerala's K-HOME Project, initiative to transform vacant houses into budget tourism facilities

The Kerala government has launched a new K-HOME scheme to repurpose vacant house into budget friendly tourism facilities. This initiative ensures income for empty home owners and a budget friendly option for accommodation for tourist making it a win-win situation.

K-Home is a project aimed at strengthen tourism facilities in the state by exploring the possibility of utilising empty houses in Kerala, Finance Minister K N Balagopal stated, during state budget presentation. He also mentioned that the project was implemented by taking inspiration from similar initiatives from across the world, aiming to provide lodging facilities at budget rates in such homes.

This Pilot programme will be introduced first within a 10-km radius of major tourist hubs including Fort Kochi, Munnar, Kumarakom, and Kovalam. The project will expand across the state after the success on its pilot phase, the Minister stated. The state budget has allocated Rs. 5 crores, for initial expenditure of the K-Homes scheme.

One of the main objectives of the K-HOME scheme, in addition to boosting Tourism is to provide an additional revenue stream for homeowners. This project will also ensure safety and maintenance of unoccupied homes due to large number of non-resident Indians, making the initiative a viable solution to repurpose unused property efficiently.
