India is planning to develop a new airfield at the Minicoy Islands in Lakshadweep, which will be capable of accommodating both military and commercial aircraft. The decision is aimed at boosting tourism in the region and enhancing surveillance capabilities over the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The airfield is envisioned to be capable of accommodating fighter jets, military transport planes, and commercial aircraft.
The proposal to develop a new airfield in the Minicoy islands has been moved in the past too, but the decision to have a joint-use airfield for defense and civilians is the latest decision in the revived plan after the diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives.
The decision aims to promote tourism in the union territory of Lakshadweep and strengthen the surveillance capabilities over the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region, with the development o the airfield.
At present, there’s only one airstrip in the island in Agatti which restricts the variety of aircraft. But now the current proposals suggests that the Indian Air Force (IAF) will lead the operations from the Minicoy’s airfield after the development.
On January 2, PM Narendra Modi visited the union territory and shared pictures of the tour, including an ‘exhilarating experience’ of him trying his hand at snorkeling. Since then the island territory has become viral and now it is the centre of discussion and attraction. People now are saying ‘no to Maldives’ instead they are promoting Lakshadweep for travel destination.
