In 2024, the Ram temple in Ayodhya surpassed the Taj Mahal as Uttar Pradesh's most popular tourist destination, with 135.5 million domestic visitors.

Uttar Pradesh received 476.1 million visitors between January and September 2024, breaking previous tourism records. Ayodhya, the nation's spiritual center and the state's most popular tourist destination, is leading the way, outpacing even Agra's Taj Mahal. According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, Ayodhya had an astonishing 3,153 foreign visitors and 135.5 million domestic tourists at the time. The opening of the Ram temple has been the primary driver of this growth.

In contrast, Agra got 125.1 million visitors, including 924,000 foreigners and 115.9 million locals.

Ayodhya is a spiritual tourism hub.

"Uttar Pradesh welcomed 480 million tourists last year, a milestone that has nearly been reached in just nine months this year," Tourism Minister commended the state's exceptional achievement.

According to industry experts, the increase is due to religious tourism's phenomenal growth. A senior travel planner based in Lucknow, described Ayodhya as "the epicenter of spiritual tourism in India" and recorded a 70% spike in reservations for religious excursions.

Other spiritual sites have seen tremendous growth as well. Varanasi had 62 million domestic tourists and 184,000 foreign tourists, while Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, received 68 million visitors, including 87,229 foreign tourists. Prayagraj, known for the Kumbh Mela, attracted 48 million visitors, while Mirzapur saw 11.8 million.

While Ayodhya shines, Agra changes.

Even if Ayodhya's spiritual attraction has brought in local travelers, the Taj Mahal remains a popular destination for foreign tourists. Despite a 193,000 drop in domestic tourists, Agra's overseas arrivals increased slightly, from 2.684 million in 2022-2023 to 27.70 million in 2023-2024.

The Taj Mahal remains an important icon for foreign visitors. Domestic tourists are increasingly drawn to spiritual experiences at Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj. It is about re-establishing spirituality and ties to one's history.

The state's Buddhist circuit, centered on Kushinagar, also saw a surge in visitors, with 1.62 million people arriving, including 153,000 foreign visitors. Changing the infrastructure for tourism
Uttar Pradesh's tourism boom has been largely due to improved infrastructure. The state now offers a holistic travel experience, from premium accommodations to guided tours and seamless transport."

The Pran Pratishtha ritual at the Ram Temple, one of its defining events, has drawn record crowds, with more expected as the anniversary in January approaches.
