Commemorating the success of Tenzing Norgay, on climbing Mount Everest in 1953 for the first time in history - Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) was built as a tribute to Sherpa Tenzing Norgey who climbed Mt. Everest the highest peak of the world for the first time with sir Edmund Hillary. HMI in Darjeeling is now a complex of various activities and units and also a popular destination by itself and a pilgrimage for all the climbing enthusiasts. The famous Himalayan Mountaineering Museum can be reached within a few minute walk from the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park or Darjeeling zoo. It is the oldest mountaineering museum in the country. The museum has two sections, the main museum at the ground floor and the Mount Everest & Mount Makalu Museum at the upper floor. The museum hosts display of accessories like ice axe cum hammer, night apparel, boots, and different equipments for mountaineering among many others.
