The recent boycott of Maldives tourism by Indian travelers has had significant repercussions on the island nation’s visitor numbers.
This boycott impacted the tourism sector as Maldives consistently draws higher tourist volumes, notably from India, compared to the relatively modest tourist activity in Lakshadweep. Indian tourist arrivals in the Maldives displayed fluctuations but generally increased from 2017 to 2021, peaking at 290, 920 visitors in 2020-2021 before slightly dropping to 241, 369 in 2021-2022.
The boycott has shifted attention toward Lakshadweep as an alternative destination, while Maldives grapples with the fallout from strained diplomatic relations and reduced tourist numbers.
In a press conference addressing the media, Nasheed acknowledged the considerable and far-reaching repercussions on the Maldives due to the current situation. He stated, “The people of the Maldives are sorry; we apologize for this unfortunate situation. We want Indian people to continue coming for their holidays to the Maldives, and there will be no change in our own hospitality.
Reflecting on the long-standing historical ties between India and Maldives, Nasheed stressed India’s responsible and supportive approach during previous challenges. He urged both nations to get past through the present circumstances and return to their usual peaceable relationship, stating, he believes these matters must be carefully ironed out, and they must revert to changing course and go back to their usual relationship, which has always been characterized by mutual respect and cooperation.
