The government of Jammu and Kashmir has asked for bids for DPRs for three proposed major ropeways, one ropeway of 11.60 kms from Baltal to the Amarnath cave shrine at 3,880 meters height. Another being sought in Budgam district and one in Ramban district. The purpose of DPRs is to promote pilgrimage and tourism as part of the Parvatmala scheme.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a written reply in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to unstarred question by National Conference legislator Sajjad Shaheen, who referred to the March 15,2022 decision of the lieutenant governer led administrative council and subsequently order by government on september 6, 2023 pertaining to implementations of ropeway projects through NHLML under Parvatmala initiative.
The government provided the information about a list of 52 developing ropeway in Jammu Kashmir as reported by NHLML, the public tender is rolled out for development of ropeway of 1.05 km for Shankaracharya temple, in Srinagar, which is under the public tender bidding and clearances.
The chief minister stated that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on April 4, 2022, between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for the implementation of ropeway projects under the Parvatmala scheme. He further mentioned that NHLML has canceled the bids for constructing the 2.12 km ropeway line from Darshan Deopdi to Shivkhori temple in the Reasi district in light of a case under litigation. Abdullah noted that NHLML invited bids on January 25, 2025, via NIT for preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the construction of the ropeway from Baltal to Amarnath cave, ropeway from Bhaderwah to Seojhdar which is 8.80 km, and 1.60 km Sonamarg to Thajiwas glacier ropeway. Although hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit the Amarnath cave shrine during the pilgrimage, the Seojhdar and Sonamarg areas are famous tourist resorts and attract a lot of holiday makers all-year-round.
The chief minister added that NHLML had invited bids for some more DPR projects for ropeway from Parihas to Diskhal in Doodhpathri resort, Sutharan to Tosamaidan meadow in Budgam and Nashri Tunnel to Sanasar Lake in Ramban.
