With the advent of spring, the beautiful scenic landscapes and climatic conditions of the Sikkim Himalayas invokes new life for tourists to explore. Based in the south west corner of the West Sikkim district, Barsey is a popular holiday destination for tourists especially during the Rhododendron flowering season. A major tourist destination Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary spreads over 104 sq. km, across the razor sharp Singalila Range, which forms the natural international border with Nepal. A walk through Oak and Rhododendron forests are mesmerizing and one you cannot afford to miss. Amidst the Rhododendron forests at 10,000 feet, a beautiful Tourist Trekker's hut exists in Barsey.
Entire hill slopes are covered with Arboreum, Falconeri, Barbatum, Hodgsoni and Campanulatum, the most commonly found rhododendron species in Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in Sikkim. The sanctuary also includes Leopard cat, Himalayan Yellow Throated Marten, Himalayan Palm Civet, Himalayan Langur, Crimson Horned Pheasant, Monal Pheasant, Kaleej and many diverse species of birds. It’s a delight for bird watchers, since plenty of rare bird species are visible during this season.
Nearest town is Namchi in South Sikkim and it is almost 55 Kms. Pelling is 70 Kms and the state capital Gangtok is situated at a distance of 140 Kms from Barsey.
