Ajanta and Ellora

Ajanta and Ellora Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India. Ajanta Caves date back to the time between 2^nd century BCE to 480 or 650 CE. The caves were built in two phases (Satavahana Period and Vakataka Period). Ellora Caves, on the other hand, have its history dating back to 5^th and 10^th century CE. The Ellora Caves are divided into three parts- Hindu Caves, Jain Caves, and Buddhist Caves.

The Ajanta and Ellora Caves consist of 64 rock-cut caves, located in close proximity from the city of Aurangabad. The site of Ajanta Caves was later abandoned and got covered in thick forest, until 1819 when a British officer rediscovered it. Today, Ajanta and Ellora Caves are a popular tourist attraction and exist in the wish list of many travelers.

If you are planning to visit Ajanta and Ellora, you will find this key attractions which are Cave 10, which is Buddhist chaitya hall with a ribbed roof and a stupa, Cave 16, which is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also known as the Kailasa Temple, and Cave 32, which is a Jain temple with a splendid sculpture of Mahavira.

The weather of Ajanta and Ellora is pleasant during the monsoons and winters, while the summers are hot and dry. The best time to visit Ajanta and Ellora is between October and March when the weather is cooler, and exploring the caves is easier. The area experiences monsoons between June and September when the lush greenery and waterfalls offer a pleasant sight.
